Mayor de Blasio easily beats Democratic challengers in New York City primary

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio is running for a second term in office and he faced off against several Democratic challengers, including former City Councilman Sal Albanese.

But even his toughest competition didn't come close to beating him.

Mayor de Blasio will now have to face off against Republican Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, who ran unopposed in the Republican Primary.

De Blasio and his wife Chirlane McCray voted Tuesday morning at their polling place in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

The mayor said he's accomplished a lot in the last four years, bringing more fairness and equality to the city.

He said stop and frisk is down 93 percent and crime is down, while also touting universal pre-K for 4-year-olds.

During his next term, the mayor said he wants to make sure every police officer is equipped with a body camera on the street, believing that can improve relations between the NYPD and the community.

Malliotakis and de Blasio will also have to run against independent candidate Bo Dietl, a private detective, in November.

New York City also was holding primaries Tuesday for other local offices. One City Council race in Queens is attracting attention because of the candidacy of Hiram Monserrate, a former councilman and state lawmaker who was expelled from the state Senate after he was convicted of assaulting his girlfriend.

Monserrate later served nearly two years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud and corruption charges in a separate case. He faces state Assemblyman Francisco Moya in the Democratic primary.

Polls in New York closed at 9 p.m.
