NYPD: Officer shoots man armed with knife, stick in the Bronx
MORRIS HEIGHTS, Bronx (WABC) -- Police shot and killed a man who they say was armed with a stick and a knife in the Bronx Sunday night.
It happened inside the Hill Halfway House on Grand Avenue in the Morris Heights section just before 11 p.m.
A 911 caller reported that a 32-year-old man was harassing people and banging on doors on the fourth floor of the building.
When officers arrived, they reportedly found him inside a fourth-floor apartment armed with what they are describing as a large knife in one hand and a wooden stick in the other.
They say they ordered the man to drop his weapons, but he did not comply. The NYPD identified him as Kawaski Trawick.
"I heard the whole thing," a neighbor said. "The police asked him to drop the knife, drop the knife, three times."
When the man approached officers, one of them deployed a Taser. But they say the man continued advancing toward them.
The same officer then opened fire, shooting the man at least once in the chest.
Trawick was pronounced dead at Bronx Lebanon Hospital.
This isn't the man's first run-in with police, according to a neighbor.
"He was arrested before by the police for the same thing, pulling a knife," the neighbor said. "But the officers that time were able to struggle the knife away from him. They took him away, but he returned. He was crying for help."
