Brooklyn Half-Marathon kicks off; finish line at Coney Island boardwalk
25,000 runners made their way to the Coney Island boardwalk Saturday, as part of the Brooklyn Half-Marathon.
The race kicked off in perfect weather outside the Brooklyn Museum.
The 34th annual edition of the race featured the largest field ever. The 13-mile course goes through Prospect Park, down Ocean Parkway, and ends up at the boardwalk.
The race brings tens of thousands of people, not just for running but for food, shopping and all that Brooklyn has to offer.
Runners get special discounts on more than 50 businesses in Brooklyn which is expected to boost business and make for a busy weekend in the borough.
"It's a great vibe on the course, a lot of energy, and as someone who lives in Brooklyn it's great to come out and run our streets," said runner Tina Marie Lohela.
"There's nothing that beats going down the boardwalk and finishing by the ocean. It's probably my most favorite race of the Road Runners series," said runner Vinod Balachandran.
There was tight security, and plenty of volunteers were on hand to help those overcome by exhaustion.
