BUSHWICK, Brooklyn - There is outrage from the law enforcement community after a judge released a man accused of attacking an NYPD officer in Brooklyn.
Police say 29-year-old Kurdel Emmanuel walked into the 83rd Precinct in Bushwick on Saturday morning and tried to take an officer's gun away from her. Police say another officer then stepped in and put Emmanuel in handcuffs.
The Brooklyn DA's office asked for $250,000 bail, but the judge released Emmanuel without any bail at all.
On Sunday night, the police officers' union slammed the decision, pointing out that Officer Miosotis Familia was murdered in the Bronx just last week.
PBA President Pat Lynch released a statement saying,
"This is a sickening display of carelessness or callousness by a judge who should be fully aware of similarity In the circumstances between this thug's crime and the assassination of police officer Miosotis Familia."
The court office was closed on Sunday night, so Eyewitness News was unable to get a comment from the judge.
The officer suffered minor abrasion and pain to her right arm. She was taken to the hospital where she was treated and released.
