Fire rips through century-old church

St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church founded in 1874
WOODSIDE St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, founded in 1874 as the first church in what was then the village of Woodside, went up in flames just before midnight. Eyewitness News is told the second-alarm fire quickly shot through the attic and walls of the old white church, on 61st Street.

Firefighters quickly put out the flames inside the "Carpenter Gothic" structure, described as having "Gothic stained glass windows, overhanging eaves, vertical siding, and multicolored roof tiles."

Officials say a day care operated out of the basement also sustained damage. But a two-story school next to the church appears to have emerged unscathed.

One person was treated for injuries. The cause is under investigation.
