Body found in Suffolk Co. cesspool

There was a disturbing discovery and perhaps a murder mystery in Suffolk County. The body of a man was found in a cesspool. And now, police say he may be someone who has been missing since last year.

Long Island reporter Lauren DeFranco has the story.

Neighbors say the man who suddenly disappeared from his little blue house was always around, helping everyone in the neighborhood. This weekend, people dug up a body from the backyard.

Investigators say they might now be one step closer to solving this mystery.

"It's very disturbing," neighbor Maria Sussman said. "He was a very good man. He worked, he was a landscaper, he worked everyday."

He was, by all accounts, a beloved neighbor named Nick. Nearly two years ago, he vanished from his home in Mastic Beach. This weekend, investigators uncovered a possible homicide.

Neighbors watched as police dug up a body buried in a cesspool in the backyard.

"He was a nice man, a very nice man," neighbor Raymond King said. "He was very quiet. He wouldn't harm a fly. And whoever did this, he didn't deserve it."

It's not clear what led detectives back to the house, but neighbors believe cops knew exactly where the body was buried. They have little doubt it was the same man who mysteriously disappeared.

"That was wrong, what they did to that man," neighbor Joseph Barnes said. "He was a nice guy, and he never did nothing wrong..He was very respectful. Every time I see him, he waved to me."

Police say their investigation is far from over.
