Teenage girl stabbed to death in Newark

Police believe a fight led to the stabbing
NEWARK Investigators believe the victim was stabbed after arguing with another female.

Police say they have strong leads, but no arrests has been made yet.

The victim in was identified as 18-year-old Idresa Lightsey, of Newark.

To neighbors, it's horrifying. But what's equally troubling is they're not surprised.

"It's sad, but it's like, we're so used to it," resident Quadiarah Williams said. "This city is used to it now. It's like, oh another one, my grief. But then again, it happens all the time. It's like waking up every day, somebody gets killed everyday."

Newark police say this is the second homicide of the year, but by this time last year there were eight.

"It's getting very bad here," resident Monique Williams said. "I don't even let my children outside, because there's just too much going on."

As for the 18-year-old girl, her death remains under investigation.

Police say the stabbing may have stemmed from an argument between two girls, but they do not know what the argument was about.

If anyone has any information about this homicide, they can contact the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Squad at (973) 621-4586.
