Body found after fire in Newark home

NEWARK Eyewitness News is told firefighters found the body while conducting a room-to-room search for an elderly man who lived on the second floor.

The body, believed to be the missing man, was discovered this morning. Authorities were originally planning to tear down the house, at Wright and Broad streets, starting at around 9 a.m.

Fire officials say a roof collapse, an interior ceiling collapse and other hazardous conditions in the ruined building made it too dangerous to conduct a room-to-room search until daylight.

It was not clear after the fire was extinguished whether the man was unaccounted for or taken to the hospital. Firefighters were reportedly, receiving conflicting stories on the man's whereabouts.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
