Thieves target copper in park lampposts

NEW YORK Park officials say theft of copper wires from the lampposts has spiked in recent months, leaving many areas without proper lighting and costing the city thousands of dollars in repairs.

Deputy Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey says that thieves took a mile of copper wire in July and August from lampposts in East River Park.

Copper was recently going for $2.25 a pound at one Staten Island scrap yard.
