Police say the lives of three baby parakeets are at stake following their theft from a Long Island pet shop. Nassau County police said Wednesday that a man stole the sun parakeets by stuffing them into his jacket pocket over the weekend in Mineola. A white cockatiel also was taken.

A police statement said the parakeets are about seven weeks old and "are in danger of dying due to the fragile state of their digestive tracts."

The four birds are valued at $1,500.

Detectives asked anyone with information to call the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-244-TIPS.
