"I saw the train coming at me. I'm like I don't want to die like this," said subway rider, Avi Katz. "I don't want to get down."
It's a thought that still haunts Avi Katz -- how he narrowly escaped being hit by a Q train here on the tracks at the Kings Highway station.
"Every single time I see a train pass by I'm thinking of me on the tracks," said Avi Katz.
Avi was coming home from school. It was dark, 6 in the evening.
The 14-year-old stepped onto the edge of the platform to see if his train was coming. That's when the ground below him literally gave way. He fell about three feet onto the tracks as the train was coming.
"I ran to the edge and grabbed and pulled myself up but couldn't get myself fully over," said Avi Katz.
He made it back on the platform which then looked like this.
"Imagine if he had knocked himself out or if he hurt his leg so bad he won't be able to climb out," said Avi's mother, Rena Katz. "I won't be talking here with him by my side."
Critics say this whole station is in a serious state of disrepair in fact act look what we found just across the platform where Avi fell.
"They need to fix up the cracks and repair the old wood and make the yellow lines more visible," said subway rider, Monique Trescott.
Workers did patch the spot where Avi fell but Assemblyman Dov Hikind is demanding the MTA do more in terms of regular maintenance.
"I'm not talking about someone with eyes open visiting stations to deal with situations that endanger the lives of riders," said Brooklyn Assemblyman, Dov Hikind.
Rena Katz says she is considering legal action against the MTA.
