Two cops rush into a burning building

Woman critically injured; cops suffer smoke inhalation

One person was critically injured in a fire in the East Village Tuesday morning.The fire broke out inside a five-story apartment building at 335 East 5th Street just before 2:15 a.m.

Eyewitness News is told a 59-year-old woman was critically injured in the blaze. She was taken to nearby Beth Israel Medical Center.

Officials say two police officers who rushed into the burning building were also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were hampered by heavy debris in the second-floor apartment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
