The driver, 52-year-old Auvryn Scarlett, of Irvington, apparently lost control just before 10:30 p.m. His truck struck a car and jumped the curb, crashing through lamp posts and signs.
Three pedestrians, two tourists from England and the Macy's employee, were then struck by the truck.
The female tourist, a woman in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 52-year-old traveling companion died at Bellevue Hospital.
The third victim was also taken to Bellevue Hospital. He is listed in serious condition.
Authorities say Scarlett, who suffered a seizure, was treated at the scene.
He was charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. An investigation revealed he had a history of seizures and did not take his medication.
The truck was owned by Action Carting of Newark.
