A daylong search of the New Brunswick facility, formally known as the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, failed to locate Petties.
But officials say there are no obvious signs of a breakout.
Petties has been at the jail for a month. He's awaiting trial for aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
The jail holds more than 1,200 men and women.
