Police-involved shooting turns into chase

NEWARK Authorities say the situation came to an end after the driver led Newark police on a crazy chase through the Holland Tunnel and over the Manhattan Bridge.

Newark police say the incident occurred shortly before 5:30 pm at the intersection of Albert Avenue and Joseph Street.

Officials say it began with a motor vehicle stop of a stolen vehicle, during which an officer shot a suspect as he attempted to run down an officer. The driver then fled the scene.

During the incident, one of the officer's weapon reportedly ended up inside the suspect's vehicle as he fled. The suspect led police on a pursuit onto Routes 1&9 and eventually into Brooklyn.

There, he crashed the car and was subsequently apprehended with the assistance of NYPD officers who joined in the pursuit. The officer's service weapon was recovered and the both officers were transported to the hospital for unspecified minor injuries.
