Young father of four murdered in Newark

The city of Newark is investigating a homicide for the first time in 50 days Tuesday. A young father was shot to death outside a grocery store.

Eyewitness News reporter Lucy Yang has the story.

Authorities say the incident happened just before 9 p.m. in front of 833 South 14th Street.

The victim's family was in tears when they arrived at the scene. They say the 20-year-old victim, Andre Thomas, was a father of four who attended Essex County Community College. They say he was working towards a better future for his girlfriend and children.

They say he was a good father and a good boyfriend. Now, he is the subject of an intense investigation.

Family members say he was going to the store to get some juice when an unidentified gunman approached and shot Thomas in the head, leaving him dead at the store stoop.
