Off-duty firefighter shot during bank robbery

Police then chase wrong man
CONNECTICUT Waterbury Fire Battalion Chief Felix Sambuco, who tried to stop the robber, was treated and released, Waterbury Hospital said.

The robber, who was still at large Wednesday evening, entered the bank wearing a black hooded sweat shirt with his face covered and demanded money, police said.

Sambuco, in the bank as a customer, grabbed the robber from behind and was shot in the leg, Police Chief Neil O'Leary said. The robber then fled on foot.

A major road was closed for nearly four hours, causing delays, and schools nearby were locked down.

Police pursued a man they believed was the suspect, chasing him by car before a confrontation in which he was shot. As police arrested him, they determined he was not linked to the robbery.

The man told police that his car was unregistered and uninsured and that he had narcotics in it, O'Leary said. He panicked and took off when he saw police.

The bank robbery may be linked to similar heists nearby over the past two weeks, O'Leary said.
