Pregnant, malnourished dog found abandoned

PATERSON The dog and two of her surviving puppies are now in critical condition as police search for the person who left her there.

New Jersey reporter Toni Yates has the story.

Animal doctors say that the dog is even alive is a miracle.

She gave birth to eight puppies. Six of them died, and it is no wonder. Officials say she endured horrible neglect.

The dog was left tied to the fence outside an animal shelter in Paterson on Saturday. The shelter was closed and it was 15 degrees outside.

Paterson's Chief Animal Control officer John DeCando got to the shelter within 10 minutes of hearing that a Good Samaritan had stayed by the dog, at the fence, after the owner left her.

Kim Deslande, a dog groomer with a big heart, is now the dog's guardian.

The two puppies and the mother will eventually be put up for adoption, but cops want the guy who abandoned her pregnant, malnourished and cold.

A $7,500 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the owner, who could face a $20,000 fine and five years in jail if convicted.

Anyone with information is asked to call 973-881-3640.

Anyone interesting in adopting the dogs can call the Save the Animals Rescue Team at 201-797-8861.
