An unwed mother who prosecutors say drowned her newborn son and then dumped his body in a trash bag at Hicksville's Long Island Rail Road station has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. Erma Stephens was convicted of manslaughter and evidence tampering last November in a bench trial conducted by Nassau County Court Judge George Peck. She was cleared of murder charges.

The 35-year-old woman was arrested in December 2006. Her baby was discovered in a trash bag on the platform of the Hicksville railroad station and detectives saw her on video surveillance tapes.

Prosecutors say Stephens was embarrassed because her son was born outside marriage.
