One man was killed in small, smoky fire in a Garfield house Tuesday night, but his mother was saved by neighbors who yanked her to safety. Authorities say 56-year-old John Madey was found in the basement of the burning home on 70 Hartman Avenue at around 10 p.m. The fire reportedly spread through the basement and spewed smoke through the home.

Madey's 85-year-old mother, Lydia Madey, had been pulled to safety by neighbors, according to officials. She was treated for smoke inhalation and released from Hackensack University Medical Center.

Two cats were also rescued from the house, while another died in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but relatives say the victim was a heavy smoker.
