Camden police officer shot

CAMDEN Camden County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Jason Laughlin said police were called to the neighborhood near 10th and Morton Streets in South Camden Monday after reports that a man identified as Lamont Morton, 19, had allegedly stabbed someone in the neighborhood.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Morton naked, knocking on the door of a house in the neighborhood, Laughlin said.

Morton and the female officer, whose name is not being released, got into a physical altercation, and then a second officer on the scene shot Morton several times, killing him, Laughlin said.

Laughlin said it is not known at this time whether the female officer was shot by her fellow officer in a friendly fire incident or whether Morton managed to obtain her gun and shoot her.

The officer was taken to Cooper University Hospital where she was in "serious condition," Laughlin said.
