N.J. residents leave $42 million in tax refunds

The taxman is waiting to give money to thousands of New Jerseyans. The Internal Revenue Service says refunds totaling about $42 million have not been claimed.

That's because more than 40,000 state residents never filed a 2004 tax return. Half of those people would get a refund of more than $620.

The deadline to file for a 2004 refund is April 15.

That's also the deadline for the 2007 tax return. People filing this year will get several hundred dollars back as part of the nation's economic stimulus plan.
