The victim's mother, Michelle Walker, rushed to her son's side just before he died.

"He was barely breathing when I got there," she told the Star-Ledger. "I held him and told him he was going to be all right, and I thought I heard him say something, but I knew my baby was dying."

Walker was reportedly a student at Union County College and was a 2006 graduate of the Union County Adult Vocational School-Techinical School. His mother told the newspaper that at one point, her son juggled college with a job at Federal Express in order to financially help her.

The newspaper reports that Walker had been out to a fast food restaurant with two friends and his cousin, Sharif Hawk. Walker had driven to Hawk's girlfriend's house on South Park Street, where they planned to play cards.

"He dropped the three of us off and said he was going to park the car," Hawk told the paper. "Not 45 seconds later, we heard gunshots."

Hawk told the paper that he and the friends rushed back outside and found Walker slumped over the steering wheel.

There was no evidence of a car theft or robbery attempt, police said.
