Three injured in Jersey City fire

JERSEY CITY The fire apparently started in the kitchen of their two-story home on Orchard Street in Jersey City.

That's where Eyewitness News reporter Carolina Leid has more.

"That boy would have been dead right now," a firefighter said.

An emotional and heartbreaking scene was on Orchard Street in Jersey City.

Firefighters say a kitchen fire sent smoke and flames throughout this two-story home just after noon.

A grandfather, his 7-year-old and 2-year-old grandsons were inside.

The grandfather tried to battle the flames with a garden house while the older boy managed to get out and beg neighbors for help.

"A little boy that was sitting on the ground and he was scared he was letting me know there was a baby in the house," said a neighbor.

"The little kid kept on saying that his brother was insides. The fire department came they went in the house and took the baby out," neighbor Enrique Ramos said. "The baby was covered in smoke."

Firefighters arrived four minutes after the first 911 call.

They found the two-year-old's lifeless body in an upstairs bedroom.

"The firefighters did a tremendous job," Chief at Jersey City Fire dept. Tim Foy said. "If it wasn't for the firefighters the young boy would be dead right now."

The two-year-old is in critical condition right at a hospital. The 7-year-old and the grandfather are expected to be o.k.
