Society Coffee is located at 2104 Frederick Douglas boulevard in Harlem.
Karl Williams opened Society Coffee nearly three years ago on Frederick Douglas Boulevard with the hopes of offering his neighbors a peaceful and communal spot.
And then there's the food. It's light fare with a few decadent options like waffles and shrimp and grits. But they're not just any grits.
For the shrimp, chef Justin Hicks sprinkles them with a mix of spices. They're sautéed along with a spicy sauce and cream.
"They have the most delicious caramel cappuccino I've ever had," a customer said.
You might find yourself becoming part of this society.
Karl, by the way, is opening another bar and restaurant just down the block in the coming months, tapping into his community's development.
Here is the complete recipe for the shrimp and grits, including how to make the gouda grits.
Sauce:
Blend all ingredients in food processor or blender. Heat, just until warm. Set aside
Grits:
Bring water to boil with salt and stock. Add remaining ingredients and cook to desired consistency
Shrimp:
Pan fry shrimp in Olive oil and butter. Season to taste.
Place grits on plate, place shrimp, then pour sauce over. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley.
