HIGH BRIDGE Police say the flames broke out in an apartment on the first floor of a 36-unit building at 1030 Woodycrest Avenue just after 6 a.m.

Flames shot out the rear of the building.

Many residents climbed down fire escapes to escape the smoke. Firefighters met them with ladders. Other residents rushed to the rooftop in blankets.

Officials say at least 14 people, mostly residents, were injured.

They were taken to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, Jacobi Medical Center and Harlem Hospital in various conditions.

One child was reported to be seriously injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigatio

According to reports, the fire building is next to 1022 Woodycrest Avenue, where nine children and one adult were killed in a fire last March.

Many of the firefighters who battled that blaze responded to this fire, as well.
