New Jersey police officer attacked

NEW JERSEY The incident happened a little before 2 a.m. Monday in Cumberland County's rural Hopewell Township.

State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones identified the police officer as Jahaira Roman, 33. It is believed the man crashed into the officer by accident, then attacked her because he did not want police involved, Jones said.

State police say the officer's vehicle was run into a ditch. She told troopers when she got out and called police with her cell phone, the man in the other vehicle attacked her with a knife.

Roman was taken by helicopter to Cooper University Hospital in Camden with face, chest and neck wounds.

Authorities are looking for a red SUV that was driven by a light-skinned male of average height.
