Elderly woman caught in crossfire

HARLEM Police are searching for the gunmen.

Prachette Martin says she was in the area when she heard gunfire.

"I heard a pap, pap," she said.

That's when she says she saw the victim on the sidewalk and tried to help.

"She was walking and she just hit the floor," she said. "And I went over there to see what happened, to see if she tripped, and there was blood leaking from her ankle.''

According to police, the victim is an 83-year-old woman. And so far, it looks like she was the unintended victim of a shooting in or around the Rangel Houses.

Police searched the area for suspects.

"It's terrible," resident Ty Tyler said. "Who knows? It could have been anybody.''

The shooting is the type of random violence some residents say they see all too often.

"It's like all the time, cops back and forth," Tyler said.

"It makes you wonder about the times you're living in," another resident said.

The victim was transported to Harlem hospital. She is listed in stable condition.
