Couple renews vows, heads to jail

NEW YORK The couple, Fabiana Reyes and Elmo Jesus Fernandez, spent the night in separate cells after the fracas at their reception Saturday night at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

"It's killing us," daughter Helen Fernandez, 21, said Tuesday. She and her father, both charged with misdemeanor counts of obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest, have been released on $250 bail.

Reyes, charged with a felony count of criminal mischief, was being held Tuesday on $500 bail. Her family was working to obtain her release.

The couple was legally married 22 years ago but never had a church ceremony before Saturday, the daughter said.

Reyes, 41, got angry when the band began packing up earlier than expected, around 11 p.m., her daughter said.

The frustrated wife responded by knocking over conga drums, a speaker and other equipment, causing more than $1,500 in damage, Port Chester Police Lt. James Ladeairous said.

Then Elmo Fernandez, 42, and Helen Fernandez got into disputes with police, Ladeairous said. Helen Fernandez maintained police pushed her, and her father stepped in to shield her.

The family has reimbursed the band, she said.

A wedding party the same night in Vallejo, Calif., ended with a pair of newlyweds under arrest, police there said.
