NYPD to test officers for steroid use

NEW YORK Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly confirmed a report on Wednesday that the testing will begin in the summer. Any officer who tests positive could be disciplined or even fired.

The 36,000-officer department already gives random tests for heroin, cocaine and other illegal substances.

Kelly says it "only makes sense to include steroids."

The decision follows an investigation of a Brooklyn pharmacy suspected of peddling steroids without prescriptions. The customers allegedly included bodybuilding police officers. Six officers have been suspended or given desk duty after testing positive.

There was no immediate response by police union officials.
