Putnam County authorities say they broke up an identity theft ring that was ready to spring and cause problems for dozens of people. Carmel Town Police say three Brooklyn residents were arrested Wednesday night when an officer made a traffic stop and saw dozens of counterfeit New York State driver licenses in the car. A search turned up stolen electronic equipment and $5,000 in crack cocaine.

Lieutenant Brian Karst says two women - 29-year-old Louise James and 53-year-old Mary Chung, and a man 29-year-old Renelique Sanchez - all of Brooklyn were arrested.

Police say they planned to use the fake IDs to get credit cards.

Each is charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of stolen property and conspiracy.

They are all in the Putnam County Jail.
