Unstable building causes evacuations

Concerns about the stability of a building on the west side is forcing residents out. Building inspectors remain on the scene at 307 west 39th street between 8th and 9th avenues.

A private engineer noticed cracks in the six-story building.

Inspectors think a neighboring construction site could be a contributing factor.

The buildings department says the building is not in danger of collapse.

The owner must stabalize it before tenants are allowed back in -- which could take a few days.
