Was insulin pen improperly used?

LONG ISLAND The medical center says insulin pens may have been reused on more than one patient - increasing the risk of Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B and HIV.

Medical Director Doctor Steven Walerstein says one nurse thought she saw a pen used on two different patients. He says other nurses also thought the pens were used on more than one patient - but nothing could be proven. Walerstein says there have been no reports of infections.

But the medical center's chief executive, Arthur Gianelli, said they will err on the side of caution and advise the patients to get checked. The hospital also notified the state Department of Health.
