One dead, 35 displaced in Newark fire

NEWARK Eyewitness News has learned the body of the 55-year-old man was found inside the remains of one of the three homes on Parker Street that went up in flames just after 2:30 a.m.

Wicked winds sent the fire leaping from home to home. "Wind was a major problem upon our arrival," Fire Chief Michael Lalor said.

Officials say the fast-moving flames sent some 35 residents running into the cold night, many in just the clothes on their backs. Several sustained minor burns and injuries.

Firefighters found the dead man's body hours after bringing the flames under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
