Baby abandoned in Flushing

FLUSHING The baby girl was discovered Sunday night on the front steps of a home on Holly Avenue in Flushing at about 10 p.m.

Neighbors reportedly heard crying from the baby girl, who is 3 days old. The baby was wrapped in a blanket, and there was a handbag next to her.

The baby is now at Flushing Hospital in stable condition.

Doctors said the baby, of Asian descent, had a band around her wrist indicating her last name and her birth date.

Eyewitness News spoke to the person who found the baby.

"My friends and I we were in big shock," Christina Yu said. "I panicked, I didn't know what to say. She's a very pretty baby."

The hospital would not release any pictures of the newborn, who is still recovering in the intensive care unit.

Eyewitness News has learned the child was born at nearby Booth Memorial Hospital. Investigators believe the mother is from China and abandoned the baby, perhaps because she is returning to her home country and did not want to bring along the little girl.
