Teen steals cop car during fight

2 pedestrians injured
Authorities say Newark police responded to a report of a large fight between students from Barringer High School just after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Park Avenue and North 5th Street.

One of the several units that responded to the scene reportedly dropped the car keys to their marked patrol unit while disrupting the fight.

One of the teens apparently found the keys and drove the marked patrol unit into two parked vehicles, one of which jumped the curb and struck two pedestrians.

The two pedestrians were transported to UMDNJ and are listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police arrested the teenaged driver and dispersed the large crowd at the scene. There were no other arrests or injuries reported as a result of the incident.

The arrested teen was identified as 18-year-old Arturo Reyes, of Newark. Reyes is been charged with theft of the keys to the vehicle, theft of the vehicle, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon (auto) and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Reyes is a former student at Barringer High School.
