Police searched a large East Orange apartment building for clues after a man was discovered dead in his closet. The Essex County Prosecutor's office has now taken over the case. Police say there were no signs of forced entry and no murder weapon was found.

Police say the victim's girlfriend found him dead in the closet of his first-floor apartment inside the Stockton Apartments at 6 Stockton Place. He had been shot in the head.

The 28-year-old victim, also known as "Dough Boy" in his East Orange neighborhood, had many friends. His mother arrived on the scene devastated.

"What did he do to someone to make them do this to him?" the victim's mother said. "I don't understand. I need some answers."

Neighbors said they heard arguing and fighting on the floor. Police also say the man's red Monte Carlo convertible was stolen and later recovered on North 13th Street in Newark.

Police say the victim did have a criminal record. However, neighbors say he was well respected and owned a barbershop.

Friends have set up a memorial in front of the apartment where he was murdered.

No arrests were immediately made.
