HealthCorps® Announces "Highway to Health" Fair and Festival 2008

HealthCorps®, the innovative health educational and mentoring program founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, announces New York City's largest single day Health FairThe event, spanning all five boroughs, happens Saturday, May 31, 2008 ( 212-742-2985; healthcorps.org).

WHAT: "Highway to Health: will offer healthy food booths, cooking demonstrations, fitness activities, health screenings and personalized medical consultations, plus sports contests, prizes and giveaways.

  • Zumba Latin-inspired fitness classes
  • Fitness workshops by the New York Road Runners Club, Plan to Excel and New York Sports Clubs
  • Mammograms courtesy of American Italian Cancer Foundation, Nutrition consultations
  • Cholesterol tests, HIV Rapid Testing, Nutrition consultations, Screenings for Asthma, Blood Pressure/Hypertension, Dental, Vision, Hearing,
  • Healthy snack samples from Vemma, Cell-Nique, Green Market and Chiquita

    Each Health Fair will reflect local flavor and a range of entertainment - live music, DJ's, marching bands, step teams, singers, dancers and jugglers, as well as appearances from:

  • Doug E. Fresh-Bronx Fair
  • Six Chasing Seven Performance-Bronx Fair
  • Bill Germanakos and Jillian Michaels from The Biggest Loser-Bronx and Manhattan fairs respectively
  • Mr. Met-Queens Fair

    WHO: Dr. Oz will make a personal appearance and host press conferences at all five locations to help draw attention to the boroughs' health facilities and resources, as well as HealthCorps' program, now established in 29 New York City high schools. Dr. Oz, cardiac surgeon, best-selling author and Health Expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show, will be joined by such celebrity guests as New York City Council members, homegrown athletes and trainers, and musical performers.

    WHERE: "Highway to Health" Fair 2008 will take place inside gyms and on school grounds:

    Staten Island-Tottenville High School at 100 Luten Avenue, between Amboy Road and Eylandt Street. Take the Staten Island Ferry or the Staten Island Railroad from St. George Station to Huguenot stop. 10 am to 2 pm; Press Conference scheduled for 10 a.m.

    Brooklyn-Grand Street Enterprise High School at 850 Grand Street and Bushwick Avenue, Subway: L to Grand Street. 10 am to 2 pm; Press Conference scheduled for 11 a.m.

    Queens-Hillcrest High School, Jamaica at 160-05 Highland Avenue between Parsons Boulevard and 162nd Street. Subway: F to Parsons Boulevard. 11 am to 3 pm; Press conference scheduled for noon

    Bronx-Lehman High School at 3000 East Tremont Avenue and Hutchinson Parkway South. Subway: 4 to 125th Street and then 6 to Westchester Sq.-E. Tremont Ave. Noon to 4 pm; Press conference scheduled for 1 p.m.

    Manhattan-Boriken Neighborhood Health Center at 2253 Third Avenue between 122nd and 123rd Streets. Subway: 4 to 125th Street. Noon to 4 pm; Press conference scheduled for 2 p.m.
