Teen critical after SI double shooting

STATEN ISLAND The shooting happened at 203 Corsen Avenue and Jersey Avenue in the New Brighton section just before 5 p.m.

Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Pegues has more.

Nigea Smith's friends are hoping the teen pulls through.

"Everybody pray for her, she's fighting for her life right now," one friend said.

Smith was shot in the neck. Another teenager with her was also shot.

They were both found in the lobby of 203 Corson Avenue, where Smith lives.

"I'm mad that it happened to her," another friend said. "It shouldn't have happened to her.''

Smith is listed in extremely critical condition at Richmond University Hospital. The second victim, a male who was shot in the buttocks, was taken to Richmond University Hospital in stable condition.

Several shots were fired, and police are still trying to piece together why.

But neighborhood residents say that they believe this is gang-related, that the suspects were actually after Smith's brother.

But she was shot instead. And now, she is fighting for her life in the hospital.

Police are reportedly searching for several suspects who fled in a Lexus.
