Stoedter drove to the Manasquan Police Department in December 2005 and said his house had been ransacked and his wife had been shot.
Police found 43-year-old Donna Stoedter dead on the bedroom floor. The Stoedters were married for 16 years.
She worked at a bank and her 62-year-old husband had a part-time job after retiring from the state Agriculture Department.
Prosecutor Luis Valentin says the small caliber handgun used to kill the victim has not yet been recovered.
An initial appearance is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.
