Paul Newman fights cancer

Behind The News
New York - June 11, 2008 Now, someone is talking about it.

Newman's partner, the writer A.E. Hotchner, says the legendary actor and amazingly generous philanthropist is battling cancer.

I'm starting this column with that news because Paul Newman is in so many ways a role model for everyone of any age. He's an amazing actor; he's been incredibly handsome at each stage of his life; he's stayed married to the same -- and equally talented -- woman for most of his years; seems to have a good relationship with his children; has given away a fortune, and managed to stay positive and progressive through his 83 years.

So our thoughts are with him and his family as he battles this horrible disease. We don't know what kind of cancer he has, or what the prognosis is. We do know that recent pictures of him show a gaunt (but still smiling) Paul Newman. And we wish him the best.

We will have the latest on his illness, tonight at 11. (Read more)

Also at 11, we're in New Jersey again tonight, as they clean up and power back up after the fierce thunderstorms of last night broke the heat wave but also broke trees, broke cars and broke power lines. Thousands are still without power at this writing, and officials are hoping to have much of the power restored by later tonight. We'll see. (Read more)

And Jim Hoffer, our investigative reporter, tonight interviews the birth mother of a three-year-old boy who was beaten to death this week. Police have charged the woman who was the child's guardian, and her boyfriend, with the crime. Jim tries to find out why the birth mother gave up her son to a woman who was forced to give up her own children in Texas because of allegations of child abuse.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Lee Goldberg with his AccuWeather forecast, and Scott Clark with the night's sports. I hope you can join Liz Cho and me, tonight at 11.
