Spokeswoman Irene Tung says marchers wanted to draw attention to assaults on and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Tung says harassment drove a lesbian couple from their Brooklyn home last year.
The spokeswoman says LGBT New Yorkers should be able to feel safe not only in gay-friendly areas of Manhattan, but in any neighborhood.
