Police shot and killed a man armed with two knives during an encounter in a basement hallway. The incident happened at an apartment building at 52 Broadway in Newark at 2:40 p.m.

Police confronted Francisco Martes, who they say was emotionally disturbed, in the basement after he had slashed a person next door.

The victim had called police after the attack. Two officers responded and found Martes wandering a hallway next door.

Investigators said an argument developed between the suspect and the officers. Officials said the suspect at one point lunged at the officers with two knives.

One officer, a 14-year veteran, fired at least five shots at Martes, hitting him in the torso. The suspect, also known as Tavares Martes, was transported to UMDNJ where he died a short time later.

Martes, a 40-year-old Irvington resident, had been arrested several times in Newark and Irvington over the past few years; twice for assaulting a police officer and once for attempting to disarm a police officer.

The officers were not injured, although both were also transported to UMDNJ for observation.

The stabbing victim was taken to UMDNJ where he was listed in stable condition. He was expected to fully recover.
