Mall wall collapses, injuring couple

PARAMUS, N.J. Paramus Police Chief Richard Cary says a section of sheet rock wall measuring about 15 feet high by 25 to 30 feet long fell onto the couple as they were walking in the mall shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Cary says the 76-year-old man suffered a compound leg fracture as well as head and arm injuries. His 72-year-old wife suffered a broken leg.

"They both had broken legs. The husband had more serious injuries, he had a compound fracture to his leg as well as head and arm injuries," said Chief Cary.

Both were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

The wall was separating an open area in the mall from an area under construction.

The Bergen Town mall is going over a $171 million overhaul, but construction has been open during the project.
