NYC buses not keeping up with ridership

NEW YORK (AP) - That's according to an analysis by the NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign, based on data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and NYC Transit.

The Straphangers Campaign compared weekday ridership and weekday service between 1997 and 2007.

It says while average weekday ridership increased 22 percent, from 2 million to 2.45 million, weekday service increased only 15 percent during that period.

NYC Transit on Tuesday disputed the Straphangers' finding, saying it increased bus service 29 percent during the 10-year period.

Since 2001, it says, bus ridership has increased by only 2.8 percent, compared with a 4.4 percent increase in service levels.
