Child, adult killed escaping flames

Two people, including a 5-year-old boy, were killed and at least eight others hurt in a fire in upper Manhattan Tuesday night.The fire broke out at West 148th Street and Riverside Drive in Hamilton Heights. It is reportedly a six-story building with 54 unites. The fire started on the fifth floor with extensions to the sixth.

Officials say that the boy and an adult were killed when they jumped to escape the conditions on the sixth floor. At least two other people are in serious condition and six others are stable, according to sources.

"[Smoke] seemed like it was filling up the apartments," one resident said. "We went to the window and looked, and my niece saw flames. I looked and I saw flames and smoke."

A few dozen people are out of their apartments as police try and figure out the cause of the fire. It has not yet been labeled suspicious, but marshals are on the scene investigating.
