Man fatally struck by Hummer in NJ

A Staten Island man was fatally struck by a Hummer SUV on Routes 1& 9 northbound in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Tuesday morning. Poilce say the 27-year-old victim was crossing the highway, near Smith Street, when he was struck shortly before 5 a.m. The Staten Island resident, who had reportedly been staying at the nearby Gem Motel, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Hummer SUV that struck the victim remained at the scene. He was identified as a 59-year-old Middletown resident.

No charges were immediately filed.

The crash closed the northbound lanes near Smith Street for more than two hours. Traffic was baked up for more than two miles during the investigation.
