House explosion kills owner in Teaneck

TEANECK, N.J. - The explosion happened around 6:30 p.m. at a house at Hastings Street and Reis Avenue.

Emergency workers recovered the body of the homeowner, 66-year-old Richard Haas, around 10 p.m. Haas lived alone in the house.

According to police, the explosion knocked out some windows on neighboring homes and started fires at three homes on Hastings street. Those fires were quickly extinguished.

One person was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities believe the explosion was caused by leaking natural gas.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News that they had smelled gas. Utility workers did checking on those reports of a gas odor, but they did not find anything.

Utility workers were at the scene Thursday night and fire officials called for a crane to be brought in to help them search the wreckage and check on reports of a gas odor.
