Police say a 28-year-old woman flagged down a patrol car and told the officers she was involved in a dispute with her boyfriend, who was inside an apartment on East 83rd Street.
Police then went inside and were allegedly confronted by her 39-year-old boyfriend who was wielding an 8-inch knife. They reportedly told the man to drop it, he apparently did not and allegedly lunged at them with the knife.
At that point, police fired one shot and he was hit in the torso. The man died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
The officers are fine, however, one is being treated for trauma.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
