Mice, fleas to blame for evacuations?

NEWARK, N.J. A team from the state Department of Environmental Protection collected air samples and inspected the building, but found no chemical use or spill. DEP spokeswoman Elaine Makatura says air samples tested negative.

Based on the information from the hospital, the Essex County executive says the cause of the irritation was a major infestation of fleas and mice.

The county is trying to help relocate the families temporarily.

Residents complained of watery eyes, sore throats and lightheadedness.

The injured were treated with Benadryl and steroids and were released.

No gas leak was found by Public Service Electric & Gas.
